Oceanside Unified School District is pleased to announce the 2019 Classified Employees of the Year. Veronica Duenas at Chavez Middle School and Mary Rearick at Palmquist Elementary School.

  Veronica Duenas

Veronica Duenas 2019 Classified Employee of the YearVeronica Duenas, (middle in photo), serves as the attendance clerk at Chavez Middle School and has worked for Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) for 26 years. Veronica is a dedicated and talented employee and provides amazing customer service to the students and staff that she serves. Her positive attitude and willingness to help anyone makes her an invaluable addition to Chavez.

“Veronica is a valuable asset to our students and families. She works in multiple capacities to tackle new challenges with ideas and solutions and is an integral part of many of their successes,” said, Principal Jenny Morgan of Chavez Middle School.

Veronica genuinely cares about each and every student, regularly going above and beyond in her service. She also greats students at the gate when they arrive for school. Additionally, over the years she has taken it upon herself to create individual incentives for chronically absent or tardy students in an attempt to encourage their timely attendance. Her clear dedication to each student has made a lasting impact on those she serves and a positive difference in her community.

  Mary Rearick

Mary Rearick 2019 Classified Employee of the YearMary Rearick, (third from left in the photo), is the Nutrition Services Lead 1, at Palmquist Elementary and has worked for OUSD for 6 years. Mary’s ability to make a connection with each student that she comes into contact with sets the positive tone for that student’s entire day. Her bright charisma and generosity makes a deeply positive impact on those that she works with and serves at Palmquist Elementary School.

Principal at Palmquist Elementary Mandy Bell, had this to say about Mary. “Mary is one of the first people our students interact with on a daily basis. Her warm smile and kind heart sets the tone for the day for our students and staff.”

The students know that she truly loves and cares about them as individuals. Mary is also sensitive to students with special needs and food allergies and takes great care to provide the nutrition that they need. Perhaps the most prolific indicator of Mary’s positivity is that she always has a smile on her face no matter how busy she may get during preparation and service.

Veronica and Mary will be recognized at our Regular Board Meeting scheduled for April 16, 2019, at 6:00 PM in our district boardroom located at 2111 Mission Avenue, Oceanside, CA 92058

Cultural Proficiency CommitteeOceanside Unified School District (OUSD), has assembled a Culturally Proficient Educator Committee (CPEC) comprised of more than 40 district staff and community representatives with the goal of leading the work of cultural proficiency throughout the district to ensure we are providing safe and equitable learning environments for all of our students.

The importance of cultural proficiency goes beyond just providing curriculum and experiences that our students can identify with. As a district, we realize the importance of providing staff with the resources and training needed to better serve our diverse population. Through partnerships with the California Teachers Association (CTA), Oceanside Teachers Association (OTA), Human Rights Council of Oceanside, MeCHA, American Friends Service Committee, and the North County LGBTQ Resource Center we will focus on increasing individual cultural proficiency and building our capacity for cultural proficiency as an institution.

Cultural Proficiency is inside-out work. The work suggests we must first understand our implicit bias, so we can ensure that we do not promote stereotypes or act on negative assumptions towards a particular group of people. Superintendent Dr. Vitale said, “ It is being aware of who you are in the world and how you operate and think, particularly towards certain groups of people.  If we can all increase our individual awareness and intentionally work towards including and valuing all people in our community we will find that the feeling of belonging will grow to all stakeholders in OUSD.”

The CPEC will participate in a series of events and trainings designed to challenge their own cultural bias and understanding of cultural diversity. Additionally, the CTA will provide two full days of unconscious bias training to the CPEC and the committee will visit the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. Through the partnership with OTA and CTA, unconscious bias training is expected to be provided to all staff by the end of 2019.

Oceanside Unified School District is committed to supporting families with various structures and from various backgrounds and providing a first class education to all students through equitable, safe, and stable learning environments. We understand that each of our unique differences contributes to the success of our community.

Oceanside Unified School District (OUSD) has adopted a cloud based technology to improve the governance process. The new service will allow OUSD to maximize the effectiveness of our board meetings while improving productivity and saving thousands of dollars annually.

Electronic distribution will not only save time and resources, but it will also provide easy public access to the agenda items and other board-related information. The new system will continue to provide interested parties access to review information prior to meetings. All documents associated with the meeting are automatically archived and can be accessed by date or by using the system’s search feature.

The new board management features can be accessed by visiting our Board Meeting website or our district homepage at: www.oside.us. For questions regarding the governance initiative please contact Ann Givens at: agivens@oside.us or 760-966-4006
